Rhodes Named Truland CAO

Reston, VA –The Truland Group Inc. today announced the appointment of Bennett Rhodes as Chief Administrative Officer for the nation’s ninth largest electrical contractor.  Rhodes has 19 years of experience in the commercial construction market and has been employed by Truland since 1997.  Most recently, he held the position of Vice President and General Manager for Truland Group companies BKTruland Electric and PelBern Electric.

As Chief Administrative Officer, Rhodes will oversee the areas of Corporate Policy, Human Resources, and Risk Management.  He will also continue to lead the BKTruland Electric and PelBern Electric business units.

Truland Appoints Clay Forehand Safety Director

Reston, VA –The Truland Group Inc. today announced the promotion of Clay Forehand, CSP to the position of Director of Safety for the nation’s ninth largest electrical contractor.  Forehand is a 16-year veteran of the commercial construction market and has been employed by Truland since 2009.  During his tenure, he has been responsible for safety policy development and oversight for more than $80M in construction projects annually. 

Says Chief Operating Officer Sean Gourlay, “Safety is vital to the continued well-being of our workforce and to The Truland Group’s success as a contractor.  I’ve seen the results that Clay has delivered as part of our safety department and have the utmost confidence in his ability to now lead that department.” 

Forehand earned a Master of Science degree in Loss Prevention and Safety  and a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Administration from Eastern Kentucky University.  He holds a Certified Safety Professional credential from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Truland Appoints Bryan Inglish BIM Director

Reston, VA –The Truland Group Inc. today announced the promotion of Bryan Inglish to the position of BIM Director for the nation’s ninth largest electrical contractor.  Inglish is a 10-year veteran of the commercial electrical construction industry and has been employed by Truland since 2004.  As BIM Director, Inglish will lead a 15-person team responsible for the production and coordination of 3D electrical installation models to support Truland’s $350M+ project portfolio.

Says Senior Vice President of Project Development, Keith Bush, P.E., DBIA, “During his tenure, Bryan has played an important role in many of Truland’s mission critical building projects.  He has been a leader in implementing 3D modeling and coordination applications and practices.  As Director of BIM, he will ensure that Truland remains at the forefront of applying building modeling technologies to our field processes to enhance productivity and the quality of our work.” 

Inglish is a licensed Journeyman Electrician in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  He graduated Valedictorian of the JATC Electrical Apprenticeship program and has completed college level coursework in graphic art and design at Alleghany College.  He is an evening instructor in CAD I and CAD II for the JATC Electrical Apprenticeship program.

Scott Named Baltimore Service Manager

Alexandria, VA –Truland Service Corporation today announced the hiring of Anthony “Tony” Scott to lead the firm’s Baltimore operations.  He brings to the position 28 years of experience in the maintenance and construction of commercial facility electrical systems and is a Master Electrician in the State of Maryland.

According to Truland Service Vice President Ron Russell, “We’re very happy to have Tony leading our Baltimore office.  He’s very well-respected in the industry and has been performing and managing this kind of work for nearly 30 years.  He knows all of the technical aspects of the work as well as how to satisfy the customer.” 

Truland Service’s Baltimore office offers maintenance services for power distribution, generator, UPS, lighting, fire alarm, voice & data, and electronic security systems as well as process power and controls.  Emergency response is available on a 24/7/365 basis.

ENR Names Truland Among Largest U.S. Contractors

Reston, VA – Engineering News Record (ENR) has listed The Truland Group Inc. in its annual ranking of the Top 600 Specialty Contractors in the United States.  The rankings, which are based upon 2011 revenues, place Truland at #12 among electrical contractors and at #30 among all trade contractors.  In 2011, the firm achieved revenues of $327M from new construction, renovation, and maintenance contracts for mission critical, federal, health care, mass transit, and other large-scale facilities and infrastructures.  This is Truland’s ninth consecutive year on the ENR list.

Truland CFO Matthew Gentile said, “Given the challenging economy, being named one of the largest U.S. electrical contractors again this year is especially gratifying.  We owe our ability to achieve this level of success to our customers and employees.  Our customer’s loyalty and ongoing faith in our team’s ability to deliver drives Truland’s success every day.”

Truland Garners Three Washington Contractor Awards

Reston, VA - The Associated General Contractors of Washington DC has recognized three Truland projects with Washington Contractor Awards.  The award-winning projects are Kaiser Permanente-Gaithersburg, Maryland Live Casino, and NRG FedEx Field Photovoltaic Energy Project.

Says Chief Operating Officer Sean Gourlay, “The DC construction market has some of the most advanced and impressive facilities anywhere.  What makes the work that Truland does exciting is seeing these buildings come together and working with the sophisticated technologies that go into them.  We’re honored to have been a part of these great projects and appreciate this recognition.”

The annual Washington Contractor Awards honor exceptional construction projects in several categories including new construction, renovation, interior, heavy industrial, and sustainable.  Entries are judged by a panel comprised of A/E/C industry members who evaluate the submitted projects with regard to quality of workmanship, project management, safety, timeliness, and owner satisfaction.  The awards will be presented at a formal ceremony tonight at DAR Constitution Hall.

Reston, VA –EC&M magazine ranked the Truland Group Inc. ninth on its annual listing of the nation’s top 50 electrical contractors.  The rankings, which are based upon 2011 revenues, place Truland in the list’s top 10 for the second consecutive year.  In 2011, the firm achieved revenues of $327M from new construction, renovation, and maintenance contracts for mission critical, federal, health care, mass transit, and other large-scale facilities and infrastructures.

Truland Among DC’s Largest Private Companies

Reston, VA –The Washington Business Journal listed the Truland Group Inc. in its annual ranking of the largest private companies in the DC Metro area.  Truland was ranked 34th out of 100 firms.  Rankings were based upon annual revenues, with the Truland Group achieving $327M in sales in 2011 from construction projects such as CityCenterDC, the FDA CBER Labs, the Inova South Patient Tower, the Metro Silver Line Extension to Dulles, and the Washington Marriott Marquis.

Reston, VA –The Truland Group, Inc. is a kayak sponsor for the 2012 Team River Runner Biathlon, underwriting one of 40 kayaks that will participate in the September 23 biathalon event in Washington D.C.  The annual event benefits Team River Runner, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping active duty military personnel wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan who are recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Truland Group Chief Operating Officer Sean Gourlay says, “Team River Runner’s mission is very close to our hearts.  We’ve seen the need for care and rehabilitation through our work building and expanding military and VA hospitals from the Ft. Matthew Gentile Joins Truland Group as CFO

Reston, VA—The Truland Group is pleased to announce the hiring of Matthew Gentile, P.E., MBA as Chief Financial Officer.  He brings to the position 20 years of experience in program management and operational and financial leadership for firms with annual revenues ranging from $50M to $30B.  Prior to joining The Truland Group, Mr. Gentile was Chief of Project Controls for Alstom, Ltd.

Reston, VA—Charles Tomasco, P.E., Vice President with Truland Transportation, has successfully completed the requirements for the nationally recognized Designated Design-Build Professional™ certification from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA).  DBIA is an association of leaders in the design and construction industry utilizing design-build and integrated project delivery methods to achieve high performance projects.

Successful completion of the exam, as well as three years substantial design-build work experience, is required to earn the Designated Design-Build Professional™ certification.  Additionally, candidates must meet DBIA’s educational requirements, must have completed DBIA’s three core courses along with 18 elective credits related directly to project delivery, and must submit three letters of reference.  Those who complete these requirements earn the right to display “DBIA” after their names, identifying them to design-build end-users and the community at-large as experienced professionals in design-build project delivery.  To maintain the designated status individuals agree to earn a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education credit every two years.

Mr. Tomasco is a registered Professional Engineer and has more than 15 years of experience in electrical and design and construction.  Mr. Tomasco has worked on numerous design-build projects, including the recently completed National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency New Campus East and the first LEED-certified ballpark, Nationals Park.  He holds a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.

Alexandria, VA—Truland Service Corporation was recently awarded a contract by Turner Construction to perform electrical construction for the modernization of Marymount University’s Rowley Hall.  Rowley Hall includes both academic facilities and dormitory spaces.  The renovation is aimed at collocating departments currently in disparate facilities and adding classroom, study, and computer lab spaces.

Matt Watson, Project Manager, said “I am proud to be involved with this project knowing the long tradition the Truland Family has at this University.   This project provides an opportunity to present to Turner SPD and Marymount University the reason Truland has been such a successful contractor for so many decades.  The General foreman, Rob Martin, is committed to delivering this project complete with minimal disruptions while catering to the University’s needs throughout the project’s life.  Our Project Team values the relationship it has with both the General Contractor and University and looks forward to the successful conclusion of this moderately sized, yet challenging project.”

Truland Service’s scope of work includes demolition of electrical systems in 55,000 square feet of academic spaces, and installation of new power distribution systems, emergency generators, lighting and controls, and fire alarm systems.  Truland Service is performing this work while Rowley Hall’s dormitories remain occupied and operational and has developed a cutover plan to minimize disruptions to electrical service to the dorms while transitioning from the existing power distribution systems to the newly installed equipment.  The project is estimated to be completed in June 2012.

Alexandria, VA—Truland Service Corporation is proud to announce the receipt of a 2012 Craftsmanship Award from the Washington Building Congress (WBC). The Kaiser Permanente, Gaithersburg Medical Office Building project was a Craftsmanship Award winner in the Electrical Category for Power Generation, Distribution, and Switchgear.  The WBC Craftsmanship Awards is the only program in the greater Washington area recognizing the outstanding skill and achievement of individual craftsmen in the construction community.

Craftsmen Charles Dotson, Bob Kaplan, Kenneth Fristoe, and Dave Maus were recognized for their outstanding work on this project. Also in attendance were Samer Kiblawi, Project Manager, Dan Link, Project Manager, James Gyuras, Director of Construction, and Dave O’Donnell, Superintendent.

“Truland Service is truly honored to be recognized for its performance on the Kaiser Permanente Gaithersburg project.  This award is a testament to our field personnel’s commitment to quality,” said Samer Kiblawi, Project Manager.

The Craftsmanship Awards Banquet was held on March 23 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. The event gathered about 1,100 people representing all aspects of the building industry.

Alexandria, VA—Truland Service is proud to announce that Randy Jurney and Thomas Kranich recently completed the Infraspection Institute’s Level-II Training Course and Exam for radiometric theory and the application of infrared thermal imaging equipment.  Both are now certified Level-II Certified Infrared Thermographers.

This course meets the requirements for training of Level-II NDT personnel in the Thermal/Infrared Testing Method in accordance with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing document, SNT-TC-1A.

Rockville, MD—Pel-Bern Electric was recently awarded a contract by Clark Construction to perform electrical construction for the a new 1 million-square foot adaptive reuse project in Washington, DC’s Shaw neighborhood.  City Market will include 86,239 square feet of retail, 552,854 square feet of housing, a 181-room select service hotel, and 500 parking spaces.  Pel-Bern’s scope of work for this project includes site and facility power distribution systems, critical power, site and facility lighting and controls, integrated electronic security systems, fire alarm, and voice and data systems.

The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2014.

Richmond, VA—Northside Truland was recently awarded a contract to perform electrical construction at the newly-completed Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Center at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center campus.  The 20 bed, 35,000 square foot facility is designed, to offer comprehensive rehabilitation to active duty service members and Veterans with the goal of returning the individual to active duty, work, school, or independent living, in the community.

Northside Truland is performing demolition or relocation of existing equipment and installing new power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, nurse call, voice/data, and integrated security systems.

The project is estimated to be completed in November 2012.

Truland announced the establishment of The Truland Group Inc., an umbrella organization with ownership of Truland Systems Corporation, Truland Service Corporation, BK Truland, Truland Transportation, Northside Truland, Pel-Bern Electric, and TECH inc.  Mr. Truland will be President, CEO, and Chairman of the privately-held Truland Group Inc.

According to Truland, the move represents a streamlining of management and administrative infrastructures to maximize efficiency and facilitate resource, technical capability, and best practice sharing across the Group.  “The integration of our teams and their management under a single entity allows The Truland Group to more precisely and effectively serve our customers.  Each company has access to the unique skills and specialized capabilities held by the other companies to meet the specific needs of each client and project,” says Truland.

Toys for Tots Campaign
Reston, VA—In the spirit of giving this holiday ...

Reston, VA—In the spirit of giving this holiday season, associates at Truland Systems Corporation in Reston donated new, unwrapped toys to the  U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots collects toys during October, November, and December each year and distribute them as holiday gifts to our nations less fortunate children. At the beginning of December, donation boxes were placed in the lobby of the Reston office to promote the charity and encourage associates to donate a toy to a child in need.

After a unanimous vote, associates agreed to donate $500 from the Denim Day fund to purchase gifts in support of the program. Nancy King, Senior Controller, volunteered to purchase the Toys for Tots items with the donated money. Truland would like to recognize Nancy for undertaking this responsibility and for doing an outstanding job selecting items for all of the age groups served by the Toys for Tots campaign.

"I am happy to be a part of Toys for Tots’ mission of bringing joy and excitement to children who might not otherwise have a gift to open during the holidays,” said Kristine Konen.

BKTruland Project Wins ENR Award
Baltimore, MD—BKTruland is proud to announce ENR...

Baltimore, MD—BKTruland is proud to announce ENR Southeast’s “Best Retail/Mixed Use Development Project” award for the Legg Mason World Headquarters/Four Seasons Hotel project.  BKTruland was contracted by H&S Properties Development Corporation to provide electrical constructions services for the $250M Legg Mason Tower/Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Mixed-Use Development, located in Baltimore, Maryland’s Harbor East Development.  The development is a 1.6 million square foot multi-purpose complex that includes a five-story parking facility, a Class A office tower and a 20 story upscale hotel. The office tower houses the new Downtown Baltimore headquarters of Legg Mason Securities, as well as future tenant space. The Hotel structure will be occupied by the Four Seasons Hotel.  The scope of work includes all normal and emergency power distribution, as well as lighting and life support for the core and shell phase of the project.

The project team included the general contractor Armada-Hoffler Construction from Virginia Beach, VA, the architect BHA Associates from Baltimore and MMM Group from Toronto, ON Canada.

Primary power was brought in by BGE to BKTruland’s parallel primary switchgear which was distributed through the facility including primary parallel services to the future hotel and condo interior build out.  BKTruland provided the power, emergency and life safety backbone for Legg Mason’s future International Headquarters to occupy 12 floors of the office space.  The entire project was completed over the course of 18 months, with the office building schedule completed within the original 12 month duration.  Contract value is expected to exceed $22 million.

NGA Campus East Wins ENR Southeast Award

Reston, VA—Truland is pleased to announce the recognition of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency Campus East with the ENR Southeast Best Government/Public Building Award.

The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency Campus East project is the consolidation of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency into new facilities in Northern Virginia.  This Integrated Design Bid Build (IDBB) project was built by the Clark/Balfour Beatty Joint Venture.  The facility is comprised of a 2.2 million square foot office building, 150,000 square foot Technology Center, a Central Utility Plant with 22.5 MW capacity, expandable to 30 MW, and a five-level precast parking garage.  Truland was the project’s electrical contractor for the office building and the 35kV site-wide power distribution system.

“This award is a tribute to the hard work of so many parties including the owner, the Army Corps of Engineers and their consultants, the General Contractor and literally hundreds of subcontractors.  This massive campus could not have been successfully completed without all of their efforts to design and build the project including Truland’s critical role in providing power to all campus facilities and constructing the office building.” says Senior Project Manager Chuck Tomasco.
